The role
As a Test Manager working in the Business Analysis & Testing team, you will take the lead role in defining and executing high-quality test policies, strategies and plans, supporting USS’ large and complex change portfolio and small change initiatives. In your capacity as Test Manager you will develop key relationships with business and technical colleagues, senior and executive stakeholders across the organisation, and third party suppliers. You will also provide mentoring to less experienced members of the team, ensuring their test capabilities are enhanced.

This role requires you to develop and maintain your knowledge of USS’ business, products and services and industry best practice in testing. You will also take ownership of the key responsibilities listed below, whilst recognising that the role requires flexibility and adaptability to support the business in the delivery of change.
 
Key responsibilities
Establish and maintain quality assured testing standards which support the high-quality definition of test deliverables, including:
Test policies defining the organisation’s approach to testing including collaboration with third party suppliers, project managers and stakeholders, and the wider business.
Standard artefacts for key deliverables including test strategy, test plan, test scenarios and test scripts.
Communicating standards and ensuring their rigorous application across all testing activities.

Take the lead role in the robust planning and management of testing activities aligned to USS’ Change Model framework, including:
Producing high-quality testing strategies and plans developed in collaboration with USS project managers, stakeholders and third party suppliers.
Planning the development of the required tests, ensuring the correct test approach is selected including test objectives, levels of testing, number of cycles, defect management 
Establishing risk-based approaches to testing, where appropriate, in agreement with project managers, stakeholders and third party managers.
Managing the specification, preparation and execution of tests including the development of deliverables to agreed standards (e.g. test scenarios and test scripts) and scheduling all testing activity.
Developing and agreeing suitable metrics for measuring testing progress and evaluating the quality of the testing delivered and the product.
Adapting the plan, based on test results and progress, and taking the necessary action to overcome any obstacles or delays.
Producing test reports, using the agreed metrics, to keep project stakeholders informed of testing progress, including summary reports at project closure.

Proactive collaboration with Business Analysts, third-party suppliers and the wider project teams to ensure business requirements and solution designs are fully understood as part of the preparation of high-quality testing deliverables, including:
Ensuring that The Test Team is fully engaged at the appropriate stages in the change life-cycle to review, assess and understand business requirements as part of test preparation.
Reviewing and assessing solution designs for testability and incorporating into test specification deliverables.
Ensuring end-to-end traceability of business requirements through to test execution, providing test coverage assurance.

Lead the design of test phases, selection of testing tools and implementation of test environments that are aligned to USS’ target operating model for change delivery, including:
Designing and agreeing the phases of testing e.g. Factory Acceptance Testing [FAT], Operational Acceptance Testing [OAT] User Acceptance Testing [UAT], Regression Testing, necessary to support the delivery of quality assured software through external third party suppliers or internal providers.
Evaluating and selecting testing tools that support the agreed phases of testing, defect management and the automation of test execution.
Ensuring the necessary test data and environments are in place from both external third party suppliers and internal providers, to support all testing activity, including mechanisms to refresh data.

Actively manage the team’s workload and also feed into resource, capacity and project planning with estimates for testing activities across the portfolio, including engagement with the wider business where there are resource dependencies.

Support the continuous improvement of USS’ Change Model framework by ensuring that industry best practice in testing is fully integrated, rigorously applied and the testing capability continuously improved.

Provide support and mentoring in testing best practice, technical skills and product knowledge, to less experienced members of the team when required.

Your experience

Exceptional test planning, management and analysis skills including development of test policies & strategies;
Able to demonstrate experience of the full testing life-cycle from business requirements to test execution through various test phases including risk-based testing approaches;
Evaluation, selection and configuration of testing tools for test management and execution including test automation;
Experience of working with third party suppliers and testing software delivered into USS’ environments including COTS packages;
Excellent communication skills: able to present complex scenarios with clarity to key stakeholders at all levels;
Stakeholder management up to executive level;

 

Desirable;

Industry recognised qualification in testing e.g. ISEB Foundation Level in Software Testing;
Mentoring less experienced Test Analysts within the team;
Supporting business case preparation;
Pensions administration system and/or investment platform knowledge;
Web-based/Digital applications e2e testing through a full stack
